TSMC and Sony form joint venture for specialty image sensor manufacturing in Japan

The companies established JASM in Kumamoto with Sony investing approximately $0.5 billion for a minority stake, targeting 22/28nm production for image sensors and automotive chips. The facility began initial production in late 2024, strengthening Sony's position in back-illuminated and stacked CMOS image sensor technology while securing dedicated advanced manufacturing capacity.
